Kelowna police catch duo red-handed with stolen bait mail

KELOWNA – Police used bait-mail to catch and arrest a man and woman from Merritt for theft.

The suspects, a 42-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, are facing charges after police arrested them in possession of stolen mail and break-in tools, along with a tracking device used by Canada Post in so-called bait mail, Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in a media release.

On Dec. 12, 2016 at 2:51 a.m. the police received a report of mail stolen from a community mailbox in the 3800 block of Dryden Road in Peachland.

O’Donaghey says Canada Post Postal inspectors used the tracking device to lead police to a red 2002 Oldsmobile Alero at a Shell gas station in the 2500 block of Dobbin Road in West Kelowna.

“Amongst the items seized by investigators, police recovered a cellular phone, gift cards and Canadian Passports,” O’Donaghey says.

One of the suspects was allegedly breaching court imposed conditions.
