A look at Canada’s Syrian refugee resettlement program, by the numbers

OTTAWA – A by-the-numbers look at the ongoing efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in Canada:

25,000: Number of government-assisted Syrian refugees the Liberals are currently aiming to resettle by the end of next month.

10,000: Number of those who were initially expected to be privately sponsored.

8,214: Number of Syrians private groups had applied to sponsor, as of Dec. 15, 2015.

551: Number of applications for private sponsorship received by the government in Oct. 2015, the highest number that year.

10: Average processing time, in months, for private sponsorship applications for Syrians in 2015.

1,634: Number of privately sponsored Syrians who arrived in Canada between January and October of 2015.

5,112: Number of privately sponsored refugees who arrived in Canada between Nov. 4, 2015, and Jan. 26, 2016.
