Hawaii bill would legalize fantasy sports contests

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Hawaii lawmakers want to make an exception to the state’s gambling ban by legalizing fantasy sports contests.

State Attorney General Doug Chin this week said fantasy sports sites, like FanDuel and DraftKings, are illegal under current state laws.

But legislators have proposed a bill that could make an exception for sites like those in light of Hawaii’s changing attitudes toward legalizing gambling. If passed, the proposal would require fantasy contests operators who offer cash prizes to register with the government and pay a $25,000 registration fee.

Nationwide, nearly 60 million Americans play fantasy sports. Several states are working on laws to regulate the industries, while two states — Nevada and New York — have banned the sites altogether.
