Firefighters battle blazes and cold temperatures in Penticton, Kaleden

PENTICTON – Firefighters in Penticton and Kaleden spent several frigid hours answering calls to structure fires on the weekend.

Penticton deputy fire chief Dennis Smith says more than two dozen firefighters responded to a structure fire call on Valleyview Road around 7:05 p.m., Saturday, Dec.17, where they found a mobile home ablaze.

Firefighters were on scene until 11 p.m. Smith says the home was significantly damaged in the fire. Three residents were displaced, two of which were provided accommodations by emergency social services, the third occupant finding lodgings with relatives.

Smith says the fire continues to be investigated. No one was injured in the incident.

Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department chief Darlene Bailey says firefighters were called to a structure fire on Dogwood Avenue in the community around 2 p.m. also on Saturday.

Upon arrival, firefighters tended to two vehicles ablaze. The vehicles were parked within close proximity to a residence and a travel trailer, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the two vehicles. Bailey says the owner reported mechanical issues with one of the vehicles prior to the fire breaking out. She said the owner attempted to douse the flames himself but was unable.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
