Summerland house significantly damage by fire

SUMMERLAND – Summerland firefighters are dousing hot spots this morning following a house fire last night.

Summerland fire chief Glenn Noble says they were dispatched to a Woods Avenue residence yesterday, Dec. 21, around 8 p.m.

They arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and flame coming from the roof of a two-storey house

Noble says firefighters were able to knock the blaze down quickly, but extensive overhaul was needed to find and douse hot spots. He says the roof and attic space suffered significant damage, with water damage occurring on the floors below.

“Parts of the building were older, and had sawdust insulation, which made things more difficult,” he said, adding ceilings had to be pulled down in order to access the fire.

The fire was confined to the roof and attic.

One firefighter was injured in the blaze after slipping on ice. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for a separated shoulder and released this morning.

Cause of the fire continues to be investigated, although Noble says initial indicators are the blaze was electrical in origin.
