Port Moody marks centennial with city council debating 100-year-old bylaws

PORT MOODY, B.C. – About a hundred years ago — on April 7, 1913 — Port Moody’s city council held its inaugural meeting.

A re-enactment of that occasion on the same date this year — complete with period costumes, antique vehicles and debate on 100-year-old bylaws — is among public events being planned to mark the city’s centennial.

Located at the east end of Burrard Inlet about 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Port Moody’s official slogan is “City of the Arts.”

On Feb. 16 the federal government announced funding of over $500,000 for the Port Moody Arts Centre Society to help repurpose a historic building into space for the arts and to support the city’s Festival of the Arts in September.

This summer, on Canada Day weekend, the Port Moody Station Museum plans to launch a new exhibit, “Port Moody: Yesterday & Tomorrow.” As well, a centennial parade is planned for June 22.

And in August, the Port Moody Heritage Society will join with Canadian Pacific Railway to offer historic train rides from the city to Mission, B.C., about 40 kilometres away.
