UPDATE: Kamloops RCMP looking for witnesses, video of North Shore fight that left a man dead

KAMLOOPS – Police are releasing few details about a homicide investigation after a fight on the North Shore early this morning left one man dead.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jody Neuls said in a media conference today, Dec. 30, that the fight is believed to have been between two men who were "recently acquainted" although she did not comment on how long they knew each other.

"This event stemmed from an argument between two men," she said. "How long they knew each other, I don't know at this time."

Police were called to Wood Street east of Tranquille Road at 2:49 a.m. A 42-year-old man was unconscious on the ground and when first responders arrived they failed to revive him.

Neuls says the men were believed to be at a local licensed establishment but would not confirm the name of the business. Police had Wood Street taped off between Cherry Avenue and Tranquille Road this morning, just across from the Duchess on Tranquille.

This is the city's fourth homicide of 2016. Less than one year ago, John Southwell was killed outside of Hatsuki Sushi restaurant on Tranquille Road. Neuls says no weapons were involved in the fight and police are working to determine who was at the scene.

"The Kamloops RCMP is aware that there were several witnesses to this event and those persons are strongly encouraged to come forward as soon as possible," Sgt. Karen Delorey said in a media release.

Neuls says it's unknown if there was just the two men involved in the fight, or if others participated. She's encouraging anyone with cell phone or surveillance video to come forward.

Kamloops RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller told reporters today police are currently in the process of notifying the victim's family and says officers will work with B.C. Coroners Service to determine when the man's identity will be released.

If you know something about this incident, you are asked to call police at 250-828-3000 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
