WASHINGTON – Flamenco dancer Edwin Aparicio has been awarded a medal by King Felipe VI of Spain.
In a ceremony Monday night, Spanish Ambassador to the United States Ramón Gil-Casares presented the award to Aparicio. It’s called the Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, and it recognizes “extraordinary service by Spanish and foreign citizens for the benefit of Spain.”
Gil-Casares says Aparicio is “one of the most sought-after flamenco performers, teachers and choreographers” in the U.S. and abroad.
Aparicio grew up in El Salvador before moving to Washington, D.C. at age 11. He took ballet and modern dance classes, and at 16 he switched to flamenco. Aparicio says he soon “fell in love” with the dance.
Over the years, he has been featured in numerous productions and co-founded a flamenco festival.
