Backup catcher one of the few question marks at Blue Jays’ spring training camp

DUNEDIN, Fla. – On a team that has few roster questions left to resolve, the role of backup catcher is getting plenty of attention these days at Blue Jays’ spring training.

J.P. Arencibia is the undisputed No. 1 catcher. But the addition of knuckleballer R.A. Dickey has complicated matters, because his is a rare pitch to handle.

Does Dickey gets his own personal catcher? Or does Arencibia get his wish to handle last year’s National League Cy Young Award-winner?

Toronto brought in Henry Blanco, Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas for catcher insurance. All three have worked with Dickey in the past.

Gibbons says it’s too early to say which one has the edge in the race for the No. 2 catching role. It will come down to whoever fits in best.

But he says Arencibia can’t catch every day and is not in charge of making out the lineup.

Arencibia will catch Dickey in his spring debut Monday. The two will also work together with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic.
