UPDATE: Suspicious package at Kelowna gas station not a threat

KELOWNA – The gift wrapped package found outside a downtown Kelowna gas station this morning is not suspicious, RCMP say.

Police were called to the Shell gas station in the 600 block of Harvey Avenue, Jan 5, to investigate.

"Out of an abundance of caution, investigators have called for the assistance of a police canine dog, specifically trained in the detection of explosive materials." Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says in a media release.

After a sweep by the police dog, an officer took a package wrapped in Christmas paper from behind a pile of firewood.

"RCMP have confirmed the item discovered outside the business was not a threat," O'Donaghey says, adding the item has been removed.

Police are not saying what was in the gift wrapped package.

Access to the Shell gas station had been restricted while the search was conducted.
