BATON ROUGE, La. – Police in Louisiana say a man suspected of shooting two police officers in Baton Rouge has died, but one officer’s back home and the other’s in stable condition.
Baton Rouge police said Sunday that 22-year-old Calvin Smith, of Baton Rouge, died late Saturday at an area hospital.
Police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said in an email Sunday evening that one officer remained hospitalized but the other had been released.
The officers responded early Saturday to a domestic disturbance reported by a woman who knew Smith.
When police arrived, Smith drove off. The officers chased him. Police say that after less than two miles, Smith jumped out of his car with a rifle and shot the officers. They returned fire, hitting Smith.
Details about any Smith’s and the officers’ injuries were not immediately available.
