B.C. asbestos-removal contractors back in court accused of contempt
VANCOUVER – An asbestos-removal contractor and its owners are in court this week to face accusations of contempt for not following WorkSafeBC regulations that protect workers from exposure to asbestos.
The B.C. Supreme Court found in 2013 that Seattle Environmental Consulting Ltd., Mike Singh and Shawn Singh were in contempt of the court for not adhering to protection rules and were fined a total of $15,000.
In new allegations before the court the group is accused of breaching the same protection orders.
The hearing was scheduled to last five days.
Asbestos is a substance traditionally used as a building insulator, and is now considered one of the leading causes of workplace deaths in British Columbia.
