‘The Bodyguard,’ Carole King musical headline 2016-17 Mirvish season

TORONTO – The stage adaptation of smash film “The Bodyguard” and a musical about acclaimed singer-songwriter Carole King headline a fresh slate of shows from Mirvish Productions.

The Canadian theatrical production company unveiled seven main shows for its 2016-17 season.

Joining “The Bodyguard” and the Tony Award-winning “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” in the new lineup are North American premieres for “Mrs. Henderson Presents” and Baz Luhrmann’s “Strictly Ballroom The Musical.”

The new season will also feature “Cuisine & Confessions” and the Tony-winning “The Audience,” starring Fiona Reid as the Queen.

Mirvish will also stage “Come From Away,” based on the story of residents sheltering passengers whose planes were diverted to Gander, N.L., in the wake of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It’s hoped the musical will then go to Broadway in the spring of 2017.

Other productions on the calendar include the drama “Fight Night,” Olivier Award-winning comedy “My Night with Reg,” and acclaimed thriller “The Butcher.”

Mirvish will also feature “Cabaret,” a new production of the ’50s musical “Forever Plaid” and the Canadian premiere of Broadway hit “The Illusionists,” along with the return of irreverent Tony-winning smash “The Book of Mormon.”
