CALGARY – The Calgary Zoo said Wednesday that the death of an otter in its pool last week occurred when the animal became tangled in a pair of pants and drowned. Some other deaths at the zoo:

October 2007: An attempt to import a six-year-old hippo from the Denver Zoo goes bad when the animal dies less than a day after its 28-hour transfer.

May 2008: About 40 stingrays die shortly after the opening of an interactive exhibit allowing visitors to pet them in the water. The zoo finds there was a lack of dissolved oxygen in the tank.

July 2009: A wild goat gets caught in a rope in its enclosure and is strangled.

December 2009: A giant capybara, a central American rodent, is crushed to death in a holding area when a worker closes a hydraulic door.

October 2011:A zookeeper resigns following the death of a corn snake. Failure to follow proper feeding procedures was found to have led to the reptile’s death.

September 2014: A problem with an ozone sensor in the hippo pool is blamed for the deaths of 85 tilapia fish.

November 2014: A five-month-old woodland caribou calf dies from complications related to sudden severe neck trauma.
