South Okanagan ski resorts enjoying winter weather
PENTICTON – The cold weather hasn’t stopped sports enthusiasts from flocking to South Okanagan ski hills this winter.
Apex Mountain Resort general manager James Shalman says the resort has been experiencing great conditions.
“It’s absolutely fantastic conditions, following one of the best Decembers we’ve had,” he said this week.
Even though it has been windy and cold in the valley bottom, Shalman says its been great weather for skiing on top, with daytime temperatures of around -5 C and lots of sunshine.
This weekend the resort hosts a Canadian Series Mogul event, attracting some of the best mogul skiers in Canada. Shalman says the event, which takes place on the Apex world cup Christie’s Run from Jan. 12 to Jan. 15, is free to the public to view and easily accessed from the resort’s parking lot. Mogul skiers navigate a 230 metre, 26.5 degree pitch course containing two aerials.
Baldy Mountain Resort’s Joey O’Brien says he's amazed at how the ski season is going.
“We’ve got the best fresh snow around. We were really busy last Monday following the heavy snowfall warning issued on Sunday even though we only received 15 centimetres,” he says.
O’Brien says the resort continues to work towards creating the best of both worlds, providing a family type ski resort that offers unparalleled powder skiing.
“Skiers don’t wear out the snow here, because of the size of the area,” he says.
O’Brien says the weather forecast for next week indicates a return to “a more typical Baldy pattern” of small pulses of snow on a regular basis from weather systems originating in the southwest.
