WINNIPEG – Babies aren’t always born in a hospital, and sometimes they arrive on a faster timeline than parents expect.

But being born in a toilet on Valentine’s Day? That’s a shocker.

Joanne Fontaine and Flinn Dorion of Winnipeg weren’t expecting for another six weeks when little Christopher decided he wasn’t waiting any longer.

Fontaine says she thought she simply had to go to the washroom but as soon as she sat down her water broke.

She could feel the baby’s head so she told Dorion to call 911, but before the ambulance could get there, their son plopped out and into the toilet.

Dorion admits he was taken aback and didn’t quite know what to do for a second, but then he reached in and plucked out his boy and quickly began to clean him off.

Being premature, Christopher is small and is being monitored at the neonatal intensive care unit at Health Sciences Centre, but overall he is healthy.

“I feel good; I’m in love with him,” says Fontaine.

The couple hopes to take baby Christopher home when he gets closer to his original due date in March.

“The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is pleased to have played a part in this safe and happy out-of-hospital delivery,” says fire chief John Lane. “It wishes the family all the best as they welcome their newest member into the world.”
