New Brunswick airport closes due to ‘potentially radioactive package’

BATHURST, N.B. – The airport in Bathurst, N.B., closed as a precaution Sunday night because of concern over a potentially radioactive package.

A statement from the Bathurst Regional Airport says it discovered the package was damaged while being unloaded from an Air Canada flight.

The statement says the package contained a substance that becomes radioactive when exposed to moisture.

The airport says two of its employees were placed in quarantine to ensure their safety, but it was determined there was no damage to the product and no possibility of radioactive exposure.

The RCMP, fire and ambulance crews were called to the airport to provide backup.

Air Canada says its flight left for Montreal once the package was removed.
