Ottawa police force offers to hold funeral for officer killed in northern Quebec
The Ottawa police service has been in contact with the family of Const. Steve Dery about the possibility of holding a police funeral there.
The officer, an Ottawa-area native, was shot and killed over the weekend while working 1,500 kilometres away, in a small community in northern Quebec.
No funeral arrangements have yet been made.
The 27-year-old officer, who worked with the Kativik Regional Police Service, was killed while responding to a domestic dispute in Kuujjuaq, Que.
The force in his hometown says it’s been in touch with the family, and they will decide on the kind of funeral service they want.
Helene Sauvageau, a spokeswoman for the family, has confirmed that the Kativik police force will work out the details with the Ottawa police.
The House of Commons held a moment of silence for Dery today.
A second officer was wounded in the incident but his life isn’t in danger.
The two officers responded to a call in Kuujjuaq. A man and a woman were at the home when they arrived. A Quebec provincial police spokesman said shots were fired at the officers shortly after they arrived.
Police found the suspect dead inside the home the following afternoon and they believe he committed suicide.
The Kativik Regional Police Force was created in 1996 to serve communities in Nunavik, which comprises the northern third of Quebec.
Kuujjuaq is the largest village in the region, with a population of about 2,400.
