Alberta’s struggles continue at Canadian men’s curling championship

EDMONTON – The host province is struggling at the Canadian men’s curling championship.

Alberta’s Kevin Martin lost 8-1 to Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs. The reigning Olympic champion and four-time Canadian champion dropped to 1-3.

Jacobs joined defending champion Glenn Howard and Brad Gushue of Newfoundland and Labrador atop the round-robin standings at 4-0. The top four teams at the conclusion of the round robin Friday advance to the Page playoff.

Howard’s Ontario team thumped Nova Scotia’s Paul Flemming 10-2.

Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton defeated Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard 7-6 to put both teams at 3-1.

Saskatchewan’s Brock Virtue defeated Prince Edward Island’s Eddie MacKenzie 4-2 to get to 2-2. Nova Scotia and P.E.I. were winless.
