MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens agreed to a three-year contract with speedy winger Paul Byron on Tuesday.
Byron, 26, could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He reportedly will earn US$3.5 million over three years for a $1.67 million average per season.
The Canadiens claimed Byron off waivers from the Calgary Flames on Oct. 6. In 40 games in Montreal, the Ottawa native has eight goals and three assists while getting an average of 13:11 in ice time per game.
The five-foot-eight 158-pound winger is tied for second in the NHL in short-handed points with five, including three goals.
“A fast-skating and versatile forward, Paul has been an important addition to our team,” general manager Marc Bergevin said in a release. “He can contribute on the offensive side while being responsible defensively.
“Furthermore, he demonstrates an exemplary attitude and the qualities of a true professional.”
Byron was drafted 179th overall by Buffalo in 2007. He has 25 goals and 34 assists in 178 NHL games.
