Large fire kicks up north of Clearwater
KAMLOOPS – You may notice a haze north of the city today after a 700-hectare fire at the north end of Upper Clearwater River was reported yesterday at the north end of Wells Gray Provincial Park.
The blaze is near Mount Goodall, the highest peak in Wells Gray and close to Cariboo Mountains Provincial Park.
As of Aug. 14 more than 410 fires started in the Kamloops Fire Centre region, nearly three-quarters caused by lightning. Only three weeks ago 79 per cent of just over the 100 reported wildfires had been human-caused.
Fire information officer Kayla Pepper said Thursday she hopes the rain forecast over the next couple of days will help with suppression efforts. The chance of rain today could also bring lightning and high winds throughout the region.
B.C. Wildfire also continues to get calls about campfires, including abandoned ones. Over the past two weekends seven $345 fines and 11 warnings have been issued under the current campfire ban.
