Revival of ‘Falsettos’ set for Broadway return this fall

NEW YORK, N.Y. – “Falsettos,” the umbrella title for two one-act musicals about family and love and loss, is coming back to Broadway.

Lincoln Center Theater and Jujamcyn Theaters said Thursday they will bring the William Finn and James Lapine’s Tony-winning musical to the Walter Kerr Theatre in September.

The musicals takes place two years apart — 1979 and 1981. In the first half, a man named Marvin leaves his wife and son for a man, and the wife finds happiness with Marvin’s psychiatrist.

In the second half, the son is preparing for his bar mitzvah. Marvin and his lover, who had broken up, are back together but the lover is sick from an unidentified illness that resembles AIDS.

The revival will have Lapine directing again, choreography by Spencer Liff and sets by David Rockwell. No casting was announced.

“March of the Falsettos” first opened in New York in 1981, while “Falsettoland,” its equally short sequel, didn’t arrive off-Broadway until nearly 10 years later. Together, they made the leap to the John Golden Theatre in 1992, lasting about 500 performances and winning best book and best score Tonys.
