Former Vancouver man pleads guilty to 1999 killing of 18-year-old girl
VANCOUVER – A former Vancouver man who evaded an international dragnet for more than a decade has pleaded guilty to killing an 18-year-old woman in 1999.
Ninderjit Singh has admitted to second-degree murder in the shooting death of Poonam Randhaw, whose body was found near her Vancouver high school.
A warrant was issued for Singh after the killing, but he vanished and lived under several aliases until police arrested him in Riverside County, Calif., in August 2011.
Defence counsel Russ Chamberlain says the plea means Singh will face a life sentence with no possibility of parole for 10 years.
He says his client will likely be deported as well because he is not a Canadian citizen.
Members of Randhaw’s family declined to comment, and the judge has scheduled a sentencing hearing for March 27 and 28.
