OTTAWA – The dollars are still being counted, but it looks as though donations towards easing the humanitarian crisis created by the Syrian civil war are falling far short of the amount the government was willing to match and well below amounts raised for other relief efforts.
Here is a look at the response to the Syrian crisis and comparable ones in the past, by the numbers.
— $100 million: Maximum amount the government said it would match in private donations to the Syrian Relief Fund made between Sept. 12, 2015, and Feb. 29, 2015.
— $12.2 million: Amount that had been raised for the fund prior to the Liberal government extending the original end-of-2015 deadline.
— $10.3 million: Amount UNICEF, World Vision and the Humanitarian Coalition raised in total during the matching period.
— $85.6 million: Amount raised for a matching fund launched after the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
— $220 million: Amount raised for a matching fund launched after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
— $137 million: Amount raised for a matching fund launched after the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the first time the government set up such a fund.
— $653.5 million: Amount that Canada has committedin humanitarian assistance in response to the Syria crisis since January 2012.
