TRUDEAU TO SPUR CLEAN TECH, THEN MEET PREMIERS

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the opening plenary session of the Globe clean tech conference in Vancouver today alongside B.C. Premier Christy Clark. Trudeau will then meet with the premiers from all 13 provinces and territories, along with indigenous leaders, to begin hammering together a pan-Canada climate policy framework.

QUEBEC TO SEEK INJUNCTION AGAINST ENERGY EAST

National cohesion on Energy East seems to be further out of reach after the Quebec government said it plans to seek an injunction against the company proposing the cross-Canada pipeline. Environment Minister David Heurtel says the project must pass a provincial environmental assessment. The Calgary-based company insists it’s a matter of federal jurisdiction. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said the Quebec move is likely to be “divisive.”

EZRA LEVANT HOPING TO QUIT LAW SOCIETY AFTER HEARING

Outspoken political commentator Ezra Levant plans to ask the Law Society of Alberta today to allow him to resign without any blemishes or findings of inappropriate behaviour on his record. Levant says he asked to resign a couple of years ago, since he hasn’t practised law in 13 years and moved from Alberta years ago to pursue other interests, including a stint at Sun TV and creation of The Rebel website.

CALGARY WOMAN HAS DOCTOR-ASSISTED DEATH

A Calgary woman who received a legal exemption for doctor-assisted death has ended her life in Vancouver with the help of two physicians. The woman, who cannot be identified because of a court-ordered publication ban, died on Monday with her family at her side. She was in the final stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ANIMAL ABUSE CHARGES LAID AGAINST DAIRY FARM, WORKERS

Twenty counts of animal cruelty have been laid against a dairy farm and seven of its employees in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, about 18 months after a disturbing video surfaced showing farm animals being viciously beaten. Chilliwack Cattle Sales Ltd. and five of its corporate directors also face charges. The accused are set to appear in a Chilliwack court in April.
