Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up $1.43, or 27.55 per cent, to $6.62 on 20.4 million shares.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Up 47 cents, or 13.66 per cent, to $3.91 on 13.5 million shares.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Up $1.55, or 19.47 per cent, to $9.51 on 11.3 million shares.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Up four cents, or 2.84 per cent, to $1.45 on 10.9 million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 39 cents, or 6.78 per cent, to $6.14 on 8.6 million shares.

Air Canada (TSX:AC). Airline. Up 38 cents, or 5.24 per cent, to $7.63 on 7.7 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Torstar Corp. (TSX:TS.B). Publishing. Unchanged at $1.96 on 169,595 shares. The company predicts another challenging year after reporting a $234.5-million loss in the fourth quarter, mostly as a result of writing down the value of its newspaper businesses. The red ink included $213.3 million of non-cash items related to asset impairments at its continuing operations. Those included $130.6 million within the Metroland Media group of smaller newspapers and $70.5 million at the Star Media group, which includes the company’s flagship Toronto Star.
