Highlights of Jan. 30 Kelowna City Council meeting

Film production studio
Council approved a development permit for the form and character of the first building in a multi-phase film production studio complex located at 3510 Spectrum Court in the Airport industrial zone. The first of two proposed buildings on the site will be used as a soundstage for film production, along with office and storage space.
Homeless-serving strategy
Council received an overview of the framework for the development of a long-term strategy to address homelessness and an update on the current community initiatives related to addressing homelessness. The Strategy will help transform Kelowna’s housing and homelessness services into an integrated system that is easy for individuals and families to navigate. Current initiatives underway include the transitional storage, Assertive Community Treatment team, Housing & Integrated Task Team, and Personal Belongings Carrier programs.
Rental housing grants
Council approved 11 purpose-built rental housing projects for rental housing grants in 2017, subject to final budget approval. To help address the low vacancy rate in Kelowna, these projects will result in the creation of more than 1,000 rental units.
Quarterly report
Council received the quarterly report update for the last quarter of 2016, summarizing some key City activities from October to December. Highlights include launching the new City website, programs to increase housing diversity, provisional budget approval, 1.7 million passengers through Kelowna International Airport in 2016, outdoor events and progress on the downtown parkades.
