OTTAWA – The RCMP says a Canadian was among those killed in a blood-soaked hostage standoff at an Algerian gas plant in January.
Cpl. David Falls, a force spokesman, provided no other details about the remains found at the site of the assault by al-Qaida-linked militants, saying the investigation is continuing.
The Jan. 16 attack in a remote stretch of the Sahara Desert led to a four-day siege and the deaths of at least 38 hostages and 29 militants.
Soon after, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said two Canadians were among the band of militants who took hundreds of workers hostage at the natural gas complex.
RCMP investigators were dispatched to Algiers, but efforts to find out more went slowly due to an apparent lack of information from the Algerian government.
Former members of Canada’s spy agency said that the Mounties would likely examine documents such as passports as well as corpses of those killed in the melee.
