3 Acadia Trails closed because of nesting falcons

BAR HARBOR, Maine – Acadia National Park officials are closing trails to protect nesting peregrine falcons.

Rangers say falcons have returned to several locations and are defending their territories, necessitating measures to protect the birds and their nests.

Trails have been temporarily closed near the Precipice, Jordan, and Valley Cove cliffs until further notice. Entry into a closed area is a violation of federal regulations.

Research suggests nesting peregrine falcons are particularly vulnerable to human activities.

Superintendent Kevin Schneider said the park’s success with peregrine falcon nesting “is one of our great conservation stories.”
