Pistachios sold in Canada recalled; blamed for at least 11 illnesses in U.S.

ATLANTA – Wonderful brand pistachios are being recalled in Canada due to possible salmonella contamination.

At least 11 people in nine U.S. states have been infected in a salmonella outbreak linked to pistachios; two people have been hospitalized. There are no confirmed illnesses in Canada associated with the consumption of these products, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Thursday.

The Wonderful products being recalled in Canada include roasted unsalted and salted pistachios in 200-gram, 225-gram and 25-pound packages with a “best if used by” label of Oct. 26, Oct. 27 and Nov. 2.

The CFIA noted that these products may have been sold in bulk or in smaller packages with or without a label and may not bear the same product names. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected products are advised to contact their retailer.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the pistachios, also sold under the brand names of Paramount Farms and Trader Joe’s, have been recalled by the grower.

The CDC says people began getting sick on Dec. 12 and those affected range in age from nine to 69. The states involved are Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Virginia and Washington.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and can last four to seven days.
