Police recover some of the items stolen from homes in B.C. landslide zone

KASLO, B.C. – Police have recovered some of the property recently stolen from unoccupied homes that were struck by a deadly landslide in southeast B.C. last year.

The thefts occurred in Johnson’s Landing near Nelson, where four people died last July when a massive land slide roared down onto their homes.

Kaslo RCMP are crediting a sharp-eyed local citizen who spotted some of the items — including a lawn tractor, table saw and other tools — piled neatly at the side of a road about 18 kilometres from the site of the thefts.

Corp. Shaun Begg says it may be a case of a guilty conscience, although several items are still missing, including computers and some vintage records.

No arrests have been made and the RCMP is continuing to investigate.

The thefts occurred in an area that remains an evacuation zone because of the danger of more slides.
