Cops launch campaign to catch drivers using cellphones

KAMLOOPS – A crackdown on drivers using their cell phones is underway in Kamloops with 37 tickets handed out on Monday.

The enforcement campaign saw officers set up at three locations in the city to watch for distracted drivers.

Not all the officers were wearing uniforms. Some plainclothes RCMP members were helping to spot people.

Tickets were handed out for infractions like not wearing a seat belt, talking on the phone while behind the wheel, running red lights, vehicle defects and failing to display a new driver "N".

Cpl. Cheryl Bush with the RCMP says there will be more of these checks coming from Sept. 16 – 17 at the intersection of 3 Avenue and Columbia Street.

The distracted driving campaign is a joint effort between RCMP, ICBC and the City of Kamloops.
