Whitecaps deal striker Mattocks to Portland for money, roster spot

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps have traded striker Darren Mattocks to the Portland Timbers for general allocation money, targeted allocation money, and an international roster spot for the 2017 season.

Mattocks was selected second overall by Vancouver in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, but never became the consistent goal-scoring threat the Whitecaps envisioned.

The Jamaican international had 20 goals in 96 Major League Soccer appearances with Vancouver, adding two goals in 11 Amway Canadian Championship games.

As part of the trade, the Whitecaps will receive a percentage of any future transfer proceeds if Mattocks is transferred out of the league.

“We’re grateful for Darren’s four years of service with the club,” Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. “He brought a lot of excitement to our team coming in as a young player. We wish him the best in Portland.”
