OTTAWA – Conservative MPs are grappling with the issue of party control and freedom of speech in Parliament after a handful of their colleagues complained they are being muzzled.
The subject was discussed at the weekly caucus meeting, but there appeared to be no resolution to the problem .
Vancouver-area MP Mark Warawa has complained to the Speaker of the House of Commons that his right to make statements on a subject of his choice before question period has been stifled.
Warawa has support from a number of other caucus members, particularly those who share his views on limiting abortion.
But the debate has crept beyond the abortion question, with other MPs framing the issue as one of freedom of speech in Parliament.
Warawa is scheduled to go before a Commons committee this afternoon to appeal a decision that ruled out a vote on his private member’s motion on sex-selective abortions.
