Report: Another New Zealander to coach Canadian national men’s rugby team

TORONTO – Rugby Canada is reportedly tabbing another New Zealander to coach the men’s national team.

The New Zealand Herald says Mark Anscombe has been offered the job. Anscombe previously coached Ulster in the Guinness Pro 12, Auckland in the ITM Cup and the New Zealand under-20 side that won the 2011 IRB Junior World Championship.

The Canadian job came open when former All Black Kieran Crowley quit in January to take over Italian club side Benetton Treviso.

Canadian women’s coach Francois Ratier has been in charge of the Canadian men on an interim basis since then.

Asked about the New Zealand report, Rugby Canada responded with a noncommittal statement from Jim Dixon, general manager of rugby operations and performance.

“Rugby Canada is continuing to follow a thorough process to select and hire the best candidate possible for Rugby Canada’s NSM15’s (national senior men’s 15s) program,” said Dixon. “Once our NSM15’s head coach is confirmed, Rugby Canada will make an appropriate announcement.”

Anscombe’s son, Gareth, is a Welsh international, qualifying to play there via his Welsh mother.
