Young children found sniffing gas in home with unsecured guns, ammunition:police

NATUASHISH, N.L. – Police in Labrador are investigating after discovering seven young children sniffing gasoline in a home that also had unsecured shotguns.

RCMP in Natuashish (NAT-wah-sheesh) say they went to the home with Chief Simeon Tshakapesh (SHAK’-ah-pesh) and a mental health worker Wednesday evening to attend to the children, who ranged in age from nine to 12.

They say there were no adults in the home, where they found two firearms, a large amount of ammunition and several lighters.

Police say they couldn’t locate most of the parents of the children, who were taken to other locations for the night.

Last September, police warned that an escalation in gas sniffing in the community involved children as young as seven.

More than 600 residents were moved to Natuashish from Davis Inlet 10 years ago after a video of children sniffing gas made headlines around the world.
