Canadian forward Alex Petan, among finalists announced for Hobey Baker Award

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Canadian forward Alex Petan, a senior from Michigan Tech, is among 10 finalists for the 2016 Hobey Baker Memorial Award honouring U.S. college hockey’s top player.

The five-foot-nine 180-pound co-captain from Delta, B.C., led the WCHA in numerous statistical categories, including goals (16), points (29), goals-per-game (0.59), points-per-game (1.07) and power-play points (13), while ranking second among all WCHA skaters in power-play goals (seven) and game-winners (four).

Petan is the fourth Michigan Tech player to be honoured as a Hobey Baker finalist in the history of the award, joining Jamie Ram (1994), Colin Murphy (2005) and Tanner Kero (2015).

The finalists were announced Wednesday. They were selected by voting from all 60 Division I college head coaches and by online fan balloting.

Three of the finalists are from Michigan: junior forward JT Compher, freshman forward Kyle Connor, and junior forward Tyler Motte.

The other finalists are Boston College junior goalie Thatcher Demko; senior forward Zac Lynch of Robert Morris; Yale junior goalie Alex Lyon; Michigan Tech senior forward Alex Petan; sophomore forward Andrew Poturalski of New Hampshire; St. Cloud State senior defenceman Ethan Prow;and Harvard senior forward Jimmy Vesey.

The three finalists will be announced March 31. The winner will be announced April 8 during the NCAA Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
