Naval gazing? Calgary Museum of the Regiments acquires photos, top- secret stuff

CALGARY – Top secret plans, blueprints of a German U-boat and a manual for training boys on Royal Navy ships are part of a collection of naval history to be be housed at Calgary’s military museum.

Two individuals have donated their collection of thousands of books, ship records and photographs to the University of Calgary.

The material chronicles Canadian maritime history from the late 1800s to the early 21st century.

Commodore David Craig, commander of the naval reserve, admits there’s irony in such an extensive collection in a museum in a landlocked province.

University vice-provost Tom Hickerson says the donation puts the Calgary Military Museums on par with the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

All of the information will eventually be digitally archived and made available to researchers around the world.
