Baird announces $13 million in aid to help Jordan deal with Syrian refugees

AMMAN, Jordan – Canada is giving the Middle Eastern country of Jordan an additional $13 million to help deal with a crush of Syrian refugees.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced the aid after meeting with senior Jordanian officials on Sunday.

Baird says Jordan has been a leader in the region, particularly when it comes to helping millions of people fleeing ongoing conflict in Syria.

He says the money will help Jordan deal with the immediate humanitarian and security needs created by the estimated 2,000 refugees arriving in their country daily.

Canada had already given Jordan $11.5 million to help with the influx.

Baird’s trip to there is part of a broader tour of the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Cyprus and Israel.
