TORONTO – A large north Toronto mall has opened its doors again, two days after a man was killed in a double-shooting in the Yorkdale shopping centre’s parking lot.

Stores have re-opened at the mall, which was closed Sunday for the Easter holiday, as police continue to search for up to six suspects in Saturday night’s shooting that left Michael Ngyuen, 23, dead and a 24-year-old man seriously injured.

Police say they believe the incident began as a fight between two groups around 8 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot outside the Sears store.

No shots were fired inside the mall, but numerous shots were fired in the parking lot.

Police say it’s believed multiple firearms were used but investigators have not recovered any weapons at the scene.

Over the weekend authorities held dozens of vehicles that were parked in the area as they combed the scene for evidence but drivers were allowed to pick up their vehicles Sunday.

Det. Rob North told a news conference Sunday that Nguyen was known to police but added there is no indication the shooting was gang related.

He said the 24-year-old man who was shot is in critical but stable condition in hospital and is expected to survive.

The mall’s management expressed shock over the incident in a statement released Sunday.

“We take security at Yorkdale very seriously in order to keep our customers safe,” the statement read.

“We have regular patrols in the parking lot, well trained personnel inside and outside of the shopping centre, and security cameras monitoring most areas of the property.”
