Longtime CBC journalist George McLean dead at 92

TORONTO – George McLean, a longtime CBC News journalist and host of The National, has died in Toronto.

The Brandon, Man., native joined the network in the 1950s and would become a familiar face and voice during nearly three decades of appearances on The National.

McLean served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War before entering journalism via a small radio station in Kenora, Ont.

Before he retired, McLean marvelled at how audiences had begun treating him like a friend or family member.

The late Knowlton Nash, another former CBC News host, once said McLean gave audiences a feeling of comfort and calm and was believed by the viewers.

The CBC News website says McLean, who was 92, died last week in hospital in Toronto.
