STEINBACH, Man. – A gay high school student in Manitoba has won the right to put up posters for a support group he started.
The Hanover School Division has decided to let Evan Wiens (WEENZ) promote his gay-straight alliance in the same way as any other student group.
Wiens, who is 17, had been forbidden from putting up posters at Steinbach Regional Secondary School.
Wiens says he is very happy and hopes the decision will make it easier for gay students to feel accepted.
Wiens has become the focal point of a battle over Manitoba’s proposed anti-bullying law.
The law would require schools to let students set up gay-straight alliances if they wished, but some religious leaders and politicians have called the idea a violation of freedom of religion.
