Kelowna HAZMAT team responds to call on Hardy Street

KELOWNA – A hissing sound and a strange odour coming from a parked transport trailer prompted a swift response from the Kelowna Fire Department's hazardous materials team today.

Around noon today, Feb. 26, crews rushed to the transport trailer in the 1500 block of Hardy Street, Steve Wallick, Platoon Captain of the Kelowna Fire Department says in a release.

The HAZMAT team entered the transport trailer and discovered oxygen tanks venting off excessive pressure.

"The process is a normal occurring event that can happen when the tanks warm up," Wallick says.

Thirteen personnel, two engines, a HAZMAT truck, a command vehicle and a safety vehicle responded to the call.

"We always have to approach these situations cautiously," Wallick says.
