Kamloops RCMP asks drivers to hang up

March is Distracted Driving Month in British Columbia. ICBC, City of Kamloops Community Safety Volunteers and the RCMP will be conducting an awareness campaign tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7th, 2017 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at the corner of Columbia Street and 3rd Avenue.

Distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor in fatal crashes in B.C., resulting in an average of 78 fatalities every year. It’s also a key contributor to injury crashes, which include pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles.

The more drivers we can convince to leave their phones alone and keep their minds focused on driving, the fewer crashes we’ll see on our roads, and the fewer injuries and death.

The fine for using an electronic device while driving is $368 and four points on your driver’s licence. The fine for a second offence in the same year goes up to $888.

Throughout the year Kamloops RCMP officers are dedicated to keeping our community roads safe and are looking for drivers using any hand held electronic device while driving.
