Multi-hectare burn planned for Lytton area
LYTTON – If smoke fills the sky near the end of the month near Lytton, don't panic because there's a planned burn that will take place over several days.
The 3.5 hectare burn is planned for the Lillooet Fire Zone and according to the release from the B.C. Wildfire Service it will reduce future wildfire threats.
Crews will execute and monitor the burn from March 27 to April 7 between Indian Reserve 17 and Ponderosa Way.
Residents of Lytton may see smoke and flames from the village and from Highway 1. The timing of the burn is dependant on weather conditions. Crews will hold off if venting conditions are poor.
"The goal of the burn is to mimic a naturally occurring ground fire and reduce the level of combustible material in grassland and open forest areas. Removal of these fuels helps reduce the threat of wildfires," fire information officer Max Birkner says in the release.
Residents can expect additional burns in the Lillooet Fire Zone over the coming months.
