Defence wants stay of charges for Calgary woman accused of strangling daughter

CALGARY – A doctor says a Calgary woman facing a retrial for strangling her teenage daughter has incurable cancer.

Dr. Jill Nation says Aset Magomadova (uh-SET’ MAG’-uh-muh-DOH’-vuh), who is 43, was diagnosed with cervical cancer a year ago.

Nation says the cancer has spread to the woman’s lower abdomen and her five-year survival rate is less than one per cent.

The defence is asking the charges be stayed, saying Magomadova is too ill to go to trial.

She was lying on a gurney in the courtroom as her lawyer made his arguments.

She is facing retrial on a charge of second-degree murder for allegedly strangling her 14-year-old daughter with a head scarf at their northeast Calgary home in February 2007.
