GPS bus tracking in the works

KAMLOOPS – An automated vehicle locator program is a priority for B.C. Transit and Kamloops should have the technology in the near future, a spokesperson said this week.

Coun. Donovan Cavers said Tuesday that people are asking when the city will get GPS on buses so you can track when a bus is due at your stop. Cavers believes it will be a great tool, especially in the cold of winter when no one wants to stand outside waiting on a bus.

Senior regional transit manager Kevin Schubert said the program is a business priority for next year and is an active program that is currently being investigated. Though the investment is large the pressure to bring this technology to public transportation is strong, he said.

“The demand and pressure is huge, “ Schubert told council. “Riders are demanding it.”

Schubert was unable to provide a date as to when the technology will come to Kamloops, but said it will be rolled out in several test communities in the near future.
