WHL Roundup: Kelowna beats Kamloops in OT, advances to second round

KELOWNA, B.C. – It took seven games and some overtime, but the Kelowna Rockets are moving on to the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Tomas Soustal scored 7:07 into the extra period as Kelowna edged the Kamloops Blazers 2-1 on Monday to take its best-of-seven first-round series 4-3.

Justin Kirkland opened the scoring for the Rockets 3:37 into the first period while Michael Herringer made 24 saves for the win.

Nick Chyzowski tied the game at 17:03 of the second period for the Blazers, who got a 32-save outing from Connor Ingram.

Kelowna went 0 for 1 on the power play while Kamloops scored once on two chances with the man advantage.

The Rockets will now play the Victoria Royals in Round 2 of the WHL post-season.
