Street sweeping to begin this week in Kelowna

Street sweeping crews will begin clearing and cleaning streets and sidewalks this week.

Due to a late season snowfall, street sweeping is starting a bit later than usual this year.

"We like to get out there as soon as the main roads are clear of ice and snow and temperatures are consistently above zero," says Stephen Bryans, Roadways Supervisor.  "We'll start with some of the major arterials and sidewalks this week, however, we may need to make a couple passes due to a significant accumulation of dirt and sand over the winter.”

Residents can make the most out of the spring sweep by moving vehicles off the road as well as any other items that could impede street sweepers such as basketball hoops. Sweeping sand and debris from sidewalks and boulevards into the gutters is also helpful for a clean sweep.

Signage will be placed at least twenty-four hours before the area is scheduled to be swept. Signs may be up longer depending on weather and available sweepers.

Sweepers will be operating 20 hours a day and working to clean up a total of 1,600 kilometres of roadways and bike lanes with anticipated completion by mid-May, weather permitting.

Residents are also advised that crews are out patching potholes. Highway 97 and 33 are maintained by Ministry of Transportation and residents can report potholes and other highway problems at www.drivebc.ca.
