Twitter launches application to let users discover music, tweet songs from Spotify, iTunes

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Twitter has launched an application that lets people find music they like and tweet songs from iTunes, Spotify and Rdio.

Twitter said in a blog post that the app, called (hashtag)music, will be available for download from Apple’s App store Thursday. A Web version is also expected Thursday.

The app uses information from Twitter chatter to find popular tracks as well as new artists. Users who follow musicians can see what artists those musicians follow and listen to songs by them.

Twitter says the service will eventually be available on Android devices as well.

An announcement about a music app has been expected. “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest tweeted about it last week.
